I like the format of the book and Steef-Jan has done a wonderful job of covering broad topics relevant to both the development of BizTalk solution and administration of BizTalk environment in 50+ easy to follow recipes. Enough details has been provided about the topic in each recipe but the good thing about this book is that each recipe also contain There's more section having valuable resources to dive deeper into the topic discussed. Here is a brief overview of what has been covered in this book:
* The book starts with the most important topic of setting up the BizTalk environment. The newbie will like the recipe on how to use the BizTalk Benchmark Wizard to validate the Installation.
* Second chapter the recipes covered some of the popular design patterns like splitter, aggregator, retry pattern etc.
* Third chapter contain some useful recipes demonstrating how to instrument the BizTalk solution.
* In fourth chapter the focus is on securing message exchange and contains some useful demonstration on how to use certificate in BizTalk for signing and encrypting/decrypting the messages.
* Fifth chapter discuss recipes related to the WCF services and BizTalk
* Sixth chapter starts with a recipe on installation of AppFabric Connect and then have some useful demonstration on how to connect BizTalk with cloud.
* Seven chapter is specifically for BizTalk administration and contain some useful recipes on configuring the monitoring tools for BizTalk e.g. SCOM, BizTalk 360.

Steef-Jan has a lot of BizTalk experience so it should come as no surprise that he has written a very practical book based upon a lot of real-world experience. This experience is demonstrated constantly through-out the book and was very refreshing.

It's been a pleasure to read and the overall impression is very good. I tend to read technical books rather than other literature, it might be hard to explain but a really good technical book gives me both excitement, experience and knowledge. For me a book should contain well described information and well explained scenarios!

This brings me into the content of the book. One of the things I find amazing with this book is that the target audience is not only developers, but architects, administrators and people not working that much with BizTalk but want to have a good reference, for that's one of things you can use this book for, you might have the knowledge of how to utilize the different tools, but configuring them and setting them up might be a hazel every now and then, this book has a complete reference to both scenarios when it comes to setting up SCOM, BizTalk360, MessageBox Viewer etc. It's a great reference of both information and how-to for using tools, setting up patterns, using the deployment framework, using Azure and AppFabric etc.

Since this is an admin blog I'll focus on the administration parts of the book, basically it provides us with a few chapters that really relevant to us.

Chapter 1

Information about gathering requirements for whats needed to design the BizTalk environment for your company, validation of the installation, SSO and MSDTC configuration and analyzing performance. Setting up a multi-server environment etc.

Chapter 3

Information of how to trace and monitor BizTalk solution usage of tools and of course the deployment framework for BizTalk (which is useful to know when creating a guideline)

Chapter 4

This chapter is partially for Administrator and partially for developer, importing and exporting certificates on the BizTalk Servers and the how to do this is described in-depth and easy.

Chapter 7

This chapter goes in-depth on how to monitor your BizTalk environment, how to set up and configure SCOM and BizTalk 360, information about the BizTalk SQL Agent jobs and how to configure the BizTalk Server Backup Job and the DTA Purge and Archive job. It also guides you through the performance monitor and PAL including the information of how to utilize tools like the MessageBox Viewer.

The rest of the chapters are more related to development but is more than welcome in my opinion for administrators, the reason why I find this book so intuitive is because everything is described easy and in-depth providing the administrator with knowledge of development elements in an easy what. It's definitely worth a read, and I think everybody should buy this book.
